Why we're featuring The Idle Countdown

Forcing prestige is a genuinely interesting twist: it deletes the classic 'hold this run forever' problem and turns every cycle into a short sprint. The result plays faster than your average text idle — closer to a series of timed sprints than a spreadsheet. If GMTK jam themes appeal to you, this updated version is the one to try.

About The Idle Countdown

The Idle Countdown, originally made for the GMTK 2026 game jam, flips the usual idle-game rhythm on its head: you are faced with a timer, and when it ends, you are forced to prestige. There's no choosing the perfect moment — the countdown decides for you. The trick is getting everything you can out of every run before the clock runs out. During the main game you can hold the mouse down to keep buying upgrades, so the last seconds of a timer become a frantic shopping spree. This page hosts the updated version of the game; the original GMTK 2026 edition is preserved on its own page. Made with GameMaker, and the page notes no generative AI was used.

How to Play

Buy upgrades while the countdown runs; when it hits zero your run ends and you prestige automatically. Between runs, spend what you earned on permanent progress, then race the next timer — hold the mouse button down to keep buying without clicking every upgrade.

Mouse – click and hold to keep buying upgrades

Tips & Tricks

Hold the mouse down instead of clicking individual upgrades — the page itself recommends it for the late-timer rush. Since prestige is forced, plan spending as if the timer will cut you off mid-purchase, because it will. Early purchases that boost income per second beat one-off clickers once the countdown gets short.
