A discount banner and a Free To Play label answer different questions. Read the store's purchase panel rather than assuming every free download stays playable forever.
| Store wording | What you get | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free To Play | The base game is distributed without an upfront purchase | Optional purchases, required accounts and the content included for free |
| 100% off / free to keep | A normally paid game can be added to your library during a promotion | The exact deadline and whether claiming—not merely launching—secures it |
| Free Weekend | Temporary access to a game during an event | The end time and whether progress carries into a later purchase |
| Demo / Prologue | A limited sample or separate introductory slice | Content boundaries, save transfer and whether the full game is paid |
| Free DLC | An add-on costs nothing | Whether the required paid base game is already in your library |

October's Steam Next Fest ran from October 19 to 26 and featured free Demos for unreleased games. Those samples belong in the Demo category, not in a list of permanently free full games, and an individual Demo can be withdrawn after the event.
Steam Scream follows from October 26 to November 2 for horror and Halloween-themed games. An event can include free games, Demos and discounts, but the event label alone does not make every participating title free.
Check Valve's official event scheduleThe October release table is the current-update module. We will replace or archive dated entries as new releases and verified free-to-keep promotions appear, while keeping the genre guide and free-access explanations on this stable URL.
Each update should recheck the actual Steam store data, distinguish a permanent free base game from a deadline, and remove expired claims instead of letting them accumulate. The Updated date above records the latest substantive editorial check; it does not promise that a store price cannot change afterward.
