Coup of Appliance takes a silly question seriously: what if every appliance in your home staged a coup against you? The developer made it for Ludum Dare 60 on the theme "old tech" — once you have gathered enough old tech, it is only a matter of time before it all breaks down at the same time, and how you react to that day is the game.
It is played as a light JRPG. There is no level system and no skill tree, by design, so the game hands you what you need to endure the event without being overwhelmed by the design itself. The page lists the genres as role playing, adventure and survival, and tags it as comedy, cute, JRPG, pixel art, retro and storygame.
The developer also explains the 48-hour jam process: all the content — the idea, art, story and music — was made during the jam, while parts of the code (the dialogue system, progression, most effects and the shaders) were reused from older projects. It plays in the browser and on Windows.
How to Play
Move between the rooms of your home and face the appliance uprising as a light JRPG encounter. There is no level system or skill tree to grind, so the game gives you what it needs. While exploring, search for stashes of items — the developer says they may help you with the final boss.
Controls
Move between rooms – WASD / arrow keys
Navigate in battle – WASD / arrow keys or mouse
Cheat – F1
