Every developer who has inherited a legacy codebase will feel this one in their bones — the joke lands because the loop is true: automation scales your output and your mistakes at the same time. The chat-log storytelling gives it more personality than most incrementals bother with. An easy recommendation for programmer-humor fans and anyone who enjoys watching an idle loop mirror its theme.
About Debug the Monolith
You just joined a company whose entire product lives in one giant legacy monolith. The test suite is red, there are a million bugs, and your job is to get every test passing. At first you type the fixes yourself, bug by bug.
Then the automation kicks in. Hire interns, senior devs, CI pipelines and eventually AI agents, each of them fixing bugs faster and cheaper than you can type — with one catch: those agents keep introducing new bugs of their own. Keeping the pipeline ahead of its own churn becomes the real game.
The story unfolds across 5 acts told through team chat and git logs, complete with incidents, regressions and AI commits with questionable messages. There's a New Game+ with a bigger codebase and carried-over bonuses, lo-fi music and keyboard sound effects (toggleable in the header), and a shareable terminal screenshot for your progress. All company names in the game are parodies, and progress saves automatically in your browser.
How to Play
Type fixes to clear bugs and push tests toward green. Reinvest what you earn into interns, senior devs, CI pipelines and AI agents to automate the grind. Balance the books: automation is fast and cheap but injects fresh bugs, so keep humans (or more agents) on cleanup, and push through the 5-act story to New Game+.
Controls
Type – keyboard, to fix bugs directly
Mouse – hire staff, buy upgrades and navigate
Tips & Tricks
Don't max out AI agents early — their new-bug tax scales with their output, and an all-agent team can dig a hole faster than you can type.
CI pipelines pay for themselves by catching regressions before they compound.
The lo-fi music and keyboard sounds have a toggle in the header if you want to grind in silence.
