Why did my skills reset in 1.0?
The first 1.0 load of an existing character clears its previous skill allocation. Reassign your available points before going adventuring. This is a planned update change; an empty allocation alone does not mean your save is broken.
Read connections and upgrade ranks separately
The earlier Forging the Path overhaul added more connections between branches, moved Double Jump into the center and made many skills upgradeable. Unlocking a node and investing in its higher ranks are separate decisions. Equipment perks can also increase a skill you already know.
Our planning advice: choose one main weapon first, find the skills that support its attacks, then add a second branch to solve a specific problem. If you need mobility, protection or a tool ability, buy toward that purpose rather than scattering points evenly across the tree.
Match the new mage skills to your combat loop
For a wand-and-staff experiment, make sure you can reliably switch weapons and supply the staff's mana and charges before spending heavily on the combo. For summons, obtain and try the relevant spell first. Extra summon capacity has little value while you are using a different spell loadout.
| You want to… | Skill to inspect | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Attack with a wand while airborne | Aerial Wand Attack | Adds an aerial area attack. |
| Combine evasion with wand offense | Wand Evasion Attack | Adds piercing projectiles to the evasive attack. |
| Build around summoned companions | Advanced Necromancy / Totem Mastery | Increase the available skeletons or totems. |
| Alternate wand and staff attacks | Blast and Cast | A wand critical hit strengthens the following staff attack for a limited time. |
Choose archer utility for the problem you have
Damage, weapon upkeep and time in the fog solve different problems. Choose by what ends your expeditions: slow kills, worn equipment or your timer. Read the current node's ranks and costs before committing; the preview announcement did not provide final values for these skills.
- Puncture improves ranged piercing damage.
- Barrage gives bow damage a chance to recover weapon durability.
- Survival Instinct returns some Shroud time after bow or dagger kills against Shroud-infested enemies.
A practical order for rebuilding
This is a decision process, rather than a claim about the strongest build. Exact node costs, total available points and a complete ranked build require a current 1.0 tree check. A pre-launch calculator alone cannot establish them.
- Write down your main weapon and one immediate problem to solve.
- Zoom out to inspect the connections, then preview the path to the desired skill.
- Compare unlocking another useful action with upgrading an existing node's rank.
- Account for the skill levels your equipped armor already adds.
- Test the changed loadout in a familiar area before investing the remaining points.
Change individual skills without rebuilding everything
For a smaller correction, inspect the skill you want to change in the skill tree. Keen added individual skill resets in Pact of the Flame, so an unwanted choice does not automatically call for a complete rebuild. Check the selected node's reset control and the game's displayed cost before confirming.
This voluntary change is separate from the automatic reset on first loading 1.0. Plan which skill will replace the refunded choice, and keep Runes available for equipment upgrades as well as experimentation.
If a skill description looks wrong
Hotfix 1.0.0.2 corrects translations for several attack skills, including the two wand skills above. Keen says additional description fixes are coming. Update the game before comparing a translated tooltip with an older screenshot.
